Kitchen Tips From an Expert Interior Designer

Updated: Aug 27, 2023

Thinking of updating your kitchen? Great idea! Kitchen updates can make your space function better, modernize the look and feel of your entire home, and most likely will increase the value of your home. All that aside, we know it can feel overwhelming. Keep reading for our favorite kitchen design tips to help get you started!

Cabinets are a huge piece of your kitchen design, since they make up so much of its square footage. When choosing a finish for them, make sure you consider the other colors, patterns, and textures in your kitchen. Your cabinets should contrast with your countertops to give your room dimension and character. Your flooring, paint color, and fixture choices should also tie in with your counters and cabinets for a finished feel.

Opt for a timeless or neutral color for your cabinets, as it’s easy to get tired of bold colors (and cabinet color isn’t always the easiest to change). Some options we love are a classic wood stain, white, gray, or even navy blue or forest green for a bit of color that’s still relatively neutral. Love tons of bright colors in your home? No worries; decorate your kitchen with bold pops of color in artwork, accessories, and tableware!

Consider adding a backsplash. If you don’t have one, not only do they add a personal touch to your home and make kitchen cleanup a lot easier, they also increase your home’s overall value! Your backsplash tile should remain neutral and light colored (think: bright & clean), but don’t be afraid to have fun with patterned and textured tiles that tie in with your cabinets, flooring, countertops, and other features. One of our favorite recommendations is to add fun color or patterned tile behind the range to truly create a focal point in your space.

Expert Tip: Order samples. Can we let you in on a little secret? A lot of times they’re free! One of the biggest ways to avoid making costly mistakes in design is taking the time to look at everything together. Once you see all the materials and colors together you can really visualize the final product, and catch anything that doesn’t belong in the overall design.

Choosing the right colors, patterns, and fixtures in your kitchen will elevate it. With so many options for colors and finishes available it can be overwhelming to tackle on your own.
