Designing the Antique Modern Goes Green Kitchen

Bringing a nature-inspired green island to this kitchen remodel felt as natural as the gorgeous view from their window!

In our latest kitchen design project, our lead designer Josh’s favorite style —Antique Modern— is getting its moment. The kitchen, last updated decades ago, featured handmade cabinetry that was of sentimental value to our client but no longer practical. Their must-have list included adding life, emphasizing nature, and creating a functional place to entertain with the addition of a green kitchen island.

Client’s interior design goal: To update their existing kitchen space to improve functionality and create a central entertaining island using an updated aesthetic that complements the natural views from their kitchen window.

Their must-haves:

  • Add more light/open up space

  • Natural colors & textures

  • Green island

  • Functional for entertaining guests

  • How to incorporate antique stove?

Designer's favorite element: Josh loves the antique-modern style of the completed design, as it’s very close to his personal design style! His favorite part of the final project is the counter to ceiling backsplash featuring pillowed subway tile. The tile has a really nice clean look, as you can see below, with just enough movement and sheen for a touch of personality.

A challenge unique to this project? At first the clients weren’t sure what to do with the existing antique stove in their kitchen. They wanted to update their space, but had a hard time envisioning how an antique piece might fit in. Wow, did they find the right design team! At Joshua Allen Design we love love LOVE incorporating antiques into our modern designs and updates, so we didn’t want to let this beauty go to the wayside! We were able to design a beautifully updated solution for their space that would incorporate the antique stove, so they kept it. The clients had the stove refinished to fit their project and it looks wonderful!
