Who knew designing an island this big would require its own zip code?!
We’ve called this project the Dream Island kitchen, in honor of its gorgeously oversized (and very dreamy) entertaining island, but it could’ve easily been dubbed the Dream Come True kitchen too!
In this kitchen remodel project we got to bring functionality and updates across the board to a kitchen in our very own hometown—Sterling, MA. Other than their dream island, this client’s must-have list included adding light, opening up the space, and creating a functional place to entertain lots of guests. Between removing an existing wall, designing the 11 foot long custom entertaining island, and bringing lightness and whimsy with details (like the wallpaper!) we’d say we’ve turned this kitchen into one worthy of a true family chef!
Client’s interior design goal: To reimagine their existing kitchen and dining space to add functionality and create a large island to suit their family's entertaining needs.
Add more light/open up space
Updates for a true "chef's kitchen"
Add an island
Functional for entertaining guests
Add places for storage
Designer's favorite element: Josh loves that the client chose the more whimsical and lighthearted of the two wallpaper options he presented, believing it adds the perfect amount of New England rustic charm.
A challenge unique to this project? Once the wall was removed, it was discovered that a carrying beam needed to be incorporated into the final design plan. Pretty quickly, we needed to adjust our course and figure out how the pantry cabinets were going to abut the beam, and what that meant for the rest of the moving pieces in this design. The solution we presented looks completely intentional, added functional open shelving, and saved our client thousands of dollars. What began as an unexpected hurdle actually turned into one of our top favorite aesthetic moments of the whole project.
