An entryway sets the tone for a home, and in an 18th-century residence, it tells a story that spans generations. This foyer update was about respecting the home’s rich history while breathing new life into its design. The result is a warm, inviting space that feels both authentic and fresh. The collaboration between Sterling & Maple (SAM) and Joshua Allen Design (JAD) brought together vision, craftsmanship, and trusted resources to create a timeless entryway that honors the home’s roots.
✨ AFTER → BEFORE ✨
Blending Old and New in an 18th-Century Home
The challenge was clear: create a design that pays tribute to the age and character of this 18th-century home without overwhelming it with modern trends. The solution came through careful layering of colors, textures, and patterns that feel intentional and rich with depth.
Wallpaper: The Wedded Woodland wallpaper by Wall Blush was chosen for its layered, timeless pattern. It adds visual interest and a nod to nature, which complements the home’s historic charm.
Wall Paint: Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan covers the walls with a warm, neutral tone that grounds the space. This color enhances the wallpaper without competing with it.
Trim and Doors: Benjamin Moore Fairview Taupe was selected for the trim and doors. This muted taupe adds contrast and sophistication, framing the entryway details beautifully.
These choices work together to create a cohesive look that feels both classic and inviting.

Paying Tribute to a Historic Home
Every element in this entryway was chosen to respect the home’s origins. The wallpaper’s intricate design echoes the layered stories within the walls, while the warm paint colors evoke a sense of timelessness. This approach reflects what the design team does best: blending old and new in a way that feels authentic.
The entryway now welcomes visitors with a story told through color, texture, and craftsmanship. Entryways are the first space guests see, and they set expectations for the rest of the home. In historic houses, this moment is even more important because it introduces the home’s unique character. It shows respect for the home’s roots and invites visitors to appreciate its history. At the same time, it offers warmth and function, making the space feel lived-in and welcoming.
The Role of Collaboration in Thoughtful Design
This project highlights how SAM and JAD work seamlessly on any size project. While the client came through SAM, JAD provided the creative vision that shaped the design. SAM served as the essential resource for materials, trades, and trusted contacts, ensuring the process was smooth from start to finish. One key partner was Dave Cranford Painting, whose expert craftsmanship brought the paint colors to life with precision and care.
Working with Clients to Bring Ideas to Life
The collaboration with the client was a vital part of this project’s success. At Joshua Allen Design, no project is too big or too small. The team works closely with clients to understand their vision and translate it into a design that fits their lifestyle and the home’s character.
Sterling & Maple supports this process by providing access to quality materials and trusted tradespeople. This partnership ensures that every detail, from paint selection to wallpaper installation, meets high standards.
Final Thoughts
Historic homes deserve designs that respect their stories and bring them into the present with care. This project is proof that with the right team and resources, any home can be transformed into a space that celebrates its past and welcomes the future.
If you have a historic home or a project that needs a thoughtful touch, remember that collaboration and trusted resources make all the difference. Whether your project is large or small, the right vision and execution can bring your ideas to life beautifully.
