Unlocking Hidden Potential: DIY Your Under the Stairs Closet into a Coffee and/or Beverage Bar

Updated: Aug 27, 2023

Every home has its hidden nooks and crannies that often go overlooked. At Joshua Allen Design, these are some of our favorite spaces for a small but mighty transformation! This brings us to today's topic: the under stairs closet. Typically used for storage, this little alcove can be transformed into something extraordinary with a touch of creativity and a dash of functionality. Our lead designer Josh and his son recently completed a DIY rehab on their under the stairs closet, turning it into the perfect coffee and beverage bar! Let's explore the exciting possibility of turning an under the stairs closet into a stylish and convenient beverage bar. With a few design tips and tricks, you can create a cozy nook that just might become the heart of your home.

Assess the Space: The first step in any design project is to assess the available space. Measure the dimensions of the under the stairs closet to determine its limitations and potential. Consider factors like height, width, and depth. Keep in mind that the goal is to create a beverage bar that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, so it's important to work within the space's constraints.

Utilize Smart Storage Solutions: Since space is limited, maximizing storage is key. Incorporate clever storage solutions that make the most of the available area. Install shelves, racks, or cabinets to house your coffee mugs, glasses, and other barware. Consider utilizing the height of the space by installing vertical storage units or hanging hooks for cups or utensils. Use stackable containers to organize coffee supplies like beans, filters, and sweeteners. By optimizing storage, you can keep your beverage bar area neat and tidy.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere: A coffee bar should radiate warmth and comfort. Choose a color scheme that complements your overall home decor. Earthy tones like browns, creams, and grays can create a cozy and inviting ambiance. We also highly suggest the power of blue! Install soft, warm lighting to set the mood. Incorporate elements like textured wallpaper, rustic shelves, or a small indoor plant to add character and charm to the space. Personalize the area with artwork or decorative items that reflect your style and interests.

Install Functional Fixtures: To make your coffee bar fully functional, you'll need to install appropriate fixtures. Consider adding a small countertop for preparing beverages and serving snacks. Incorporate a mini-fridge to keep drinks chilled, or install a compact wine rack for those who enjoy an occasional glass 😉. Choose a coffee maker or espresso machine that fits the available space and meets your favorite brewing preferences.

*A Note About Seating*: If your closet is spacious enough or the adjoining room allows, consider adding a seating area near your coffee bar. Install a small bench, stool, or a couple of comfortable chairs where you and your guests can sit and enjoy beverages. If space is limited, opt for space-saving solutions such as foldable chairs or built-in seating that can be tucked away when not in use. BUT please remember, the seating should be both functional and comfortable.

Unlocking the hidden potential of an under the stairs closet can add a unique touch to your home. By converting it into a coffee/beverage bar, you'll create a charming and functional space that brings people together. With careful planning and thoughtful design, this once overlooked corner will become a cozy nook where you can enjoy your morning coffee, entertain guests, or simply relax with a favorite book. So, get creative and turn that under the stairs closet into a stylish and inviting coffee and dry bar that adds a delightful dimension to your home. Cheers!
